Metal roofs have a longer life and are easier to install. These properties make them a promising prospect for a roof installation or replacement decision. These roofs do not accumulate as much dirt and debris as compared to wooden roofs or asphalt shingles because of their inorganic nature. However, before conducting an inspection for leaks and repairs, metal roofs need proper cleaning. Applying standard soap and water will not do well if any as it will not remove mold, mildew, tree sap or any number of forms of residue built up over time. In order to ensure proper cleaning, a strong cleaner needs to be applied. One such cleaner that will do just the right job is tri sodium phosphate. When mix with chlorine, it removes years of dirt as well as mold and mildew.
In order to clean the roof, follow the following steps:
- Mix 1/2 cup of tri sodium phosphate in 2 gallons of water. In case the roof is infested with moss or mildew, add 1/2 cup of chlorine bleach to the solution.
- Pour a few ounces of the cleaning mixture onto a small section of the roof. Spread it evenly with a long-handled push broom and let it soak for 10 to 15 minutes.
- Scrub the mixture with the broom to loosen any remaining dirt and rinse with a garden hose. The temperature should not be set more than 1000 psi.
